چکیده

This paper defends the view, put roughly, that to think p is guess answer question at hand, and rationally for one’s be (in a certain sense) non-arbitrary. Some theses will argued along way include: thinking question-sensitive and, correspondingly, ‘thinks’ context-sensitive; it can rational while having arbitrarily low credence p; that, nonetheless, closed under entailment; does not supervene on credence; in many cases what one thinks matters is, very literal sense, choice. Finally, since there are strong reasons believe just believing, each of these claims true belief as well.

Thinking Is Believing

The idea that people can entertain propositions without believing them is widespread, intuitive, and most probably false. The main goal of this essay is to argue against the claim that people can entertain a proposition without believing it. Evidence is presented demonstrating that we cannot withhold assent from any proposition we happen to consider. A model of belief fixation is then sketched ...

Guessing versus choosing – and seeing versus believing – in false belief tasks

Threeand 4-year-old children were tested using videos of puppets in various versions of a theory of mind change-of-location situation, in order to answer several questions about what children are doing when they pass false belief tests. To investigate whether children were guessing or confidently choosing their answer to the test question, a condition in which children were forced to guess was ...

Thinking and Guessing: Bayesian and Empirical Models of How Humans Search

Searching natural environments, as for example, when foraging or looking for a landmark in a city, combine reasoning under uncertainty, planning and visual search. Existing paradigms for studying search in humans focus on its isolated aspects, such as step-by-step information sampling or visual search, without examining advance planning. We propose and evaluate a Bayesian model of how people se...

Guessing and non-guessing of canonical functions

It is possible to control to a large extent, via semiproper forcing, the parameters (β0, β1) measuring the guessing density of the members of any given antichain of stationary subsets of ω1 (assuming the existence of an inaccessible limit of measurable cardinals). Here, given a pair (β0, β1) of ordinals, we will say that a stationary set S ⊆ ω1 has guessing density (β0, β1) if β0 = γ(S) and β1 ...

The potential for developing algebraic thinking from purposeful guessing and checking

Two contrasting problem solving episodes are presented in which a pre-algebra student uses systematic guessing and checking to solve algebra word problems with the underlying structure: “For a given y, m, and b, find x such that y=mx+b.” The first episode illustrates how the student initially engages in systematic guessing and checking organized in a table (a “Guess and Check chart”) to converg...
